The travel and tourism industry is one of the world’s largest industrial sectors. It encourages economic growth, creates jobs, improves social development, and preserves culture and heritage. Hundreds of people around the world are dependent on the tourism sector for their employment. The Department of Travel and Tourism Management, Fathima Arts and Science College, Moothedam, started functioning in August 2019 with 24 students. The department offers a 3-year undergraduate program in Travel and Tourism Management (BTTM—Choice-Based Credit and Semester System).

The course Is designed to produce professional human resources for the dynamically growing travel & tourism sector. The course offers comprehensive exposure to all aspects of the travel and tourism industry. There are 15 core courses, including a project report, two complementary courses, and one elective course. The core course consists of various theoretical aspects of travel & tourism, travel agency and tour operations management, accommodation operations, airline and cargo management, etc. The two complimentary courses offered are Introduction to Accountancy and Business Law and Business Statistics and Information Technology. The elective course is Event Management and MICE Tourism.

The program also comprises workshops and seminars, demonstration and appreciation of art forms, study tours, field visits, familiarization training, projects, and participation in various tourism events. The approved intake of students is 30, following all the reservation norms by the Govt. of Kerala.

Objectives

  • Getting exposure to the fundamental concepts and theories in acquiring skills for different aspects of tourism.
  • Achieve critical sensibility towards the social, economic, and community situation and to develop critical thinking ability that will be useful to them in their personal and professional life.
  • Make the students competent for employment tourism and hospitality across the globe.

Scope

After the successful completion of the course each student shall have the following proficiency and competency

  • Knowledge to interpret the fundamental principles of essential hospitality and tourism business function.
  • Demonstrate competencies in interpersonal communication and organising skills.
  • Develop self esteem and a sense of self presentation.
  • Demonstrate professional behaviour and competencies in customer service.
  • Demonstrate ability to work in travel and tourism industries.

Course content

The BTTM degree program has the following components

  • Theoretical classroom section.
  • Study tour each year to learn about tour operations.
  • Industrial visit to a five star hotel or resort to learn operations in a hotel or resort.
  • There are core courses, complementary courses, project, open courses and audit courses that are connected to the tourism and hospitality industry.

Higher studies options

The students can go for various PG programs like MBA(different streams), MTTM, MTHM, MHM, Hotel management and catering science etc, in IITTM ( Indian Institute of Tourism and Travel Management), KITTS (Kerala Institute of Travel and Tourism Studies), Pondichéry university, Jamia millia islamia etc, and abroad.
